The city of Varna is one of the oldest and historically richest cities in Bulgaria. You can find everything here – beautiful nature, sea, forests, historical and cultural landmarks, architectural works of art… and all of that combined in a unique way that is appreciated by residents and guests of the city. We will present to you some mandatory cultural, historical and architectural landmarks in the region that do not leave anyone indifferent!

Aladzha Monastery

Medieval Aladzha Rock Monastery is located about 17km north of Varna and 3km west of Golden Sands. „Aladzha“ is a Turkish word and in its meaning in Bulgarian is colorful.

Aladzha Monastery was established in 12-13th century, and later abandoned in 18th century. Its first research was conducted in the late 19th century by the brothers Herman and Karel Skorpil. Nowadays the monastery functions as a museum and tourist site. In 1912 it was declared a national historical monument and in 1957 – an architectural monument of national importance.

Close to this interesting rock monastery is situated Golden Sands natural park.

 

Pobiti Kamani (Stone Forest)

Pobiti Kamani is a rock formation situated around 18km west of Varna (close to the villages Slanchevo, Banovo and Strashimirovo).It consists of several groups of natural rock formations on a total area of 7 km².

The formations are mainly stone columns between 5 and 7 meters high and from 0.3 to 3 meters thick. They look like they are stuck into the surrounding sands, which gives the phenomenon its name. In order to be preserved, Pobiti Kamani was designated a natural landmark in 1937.

The Roman Thermae

The Odessos Roman Baths are amongst the most preserved architectural monuments of the ancient times in the country. They are located in the Southeastern part of modern Varna, near the port. The baths were constructed in the late 2nd century AD and rank as the fourth-largest preserved Roman thermae in Europe and the largest in the Balkans. They have an area of some 7,000 m2, with the vaults reaching up to 20 in height. The baths existed until the end of III century.

In XIX century the vaults of the baths have been used as a prison called by the Turks “Ichkale“.

Nowadays during the summer there is a theater in the Thermae and also concerts are taking place.

 

Euxinograd Palace

The Euxinograd Palace is located in the north part of Sea Garden of Varna. The complex (castle and park) was used as a summer residence by the monarchs who governed Bulgaria after the liberation (1878). Nowadays it is used by the government representatives for meeting and greeting other government officials. The complex is also open for tourist visits.
